Feminisim if for Everyone
Hey guys, so I have a little comment about the reading from Bell Hooks, Feminism is for Everyone. In the first chapter she stated that a woman cannot be anti-choice and a feminist. However, I disagree with this statement. I felt she was basing her idea of a feminist strictly off of her definition of feminism, which not everyone in the world would completely agree with. Also, I understand that she says a woman who would never personally choose to have an abortion, but is pro-choice is a feminist. I feel abortion is only one issue compared to tons of other issues that deal with women’s rights. It is also a very controversial and personal topic. So I feel that a woman can still be feminist even if she is anti-choice because 99% of her other views maybe totally feminist. Abortion is one topic that is major to feminism, but at the same time is difficult to completely agree with depending on a woman’s age and religion. I felt that her determination of who is and who is not a feminist to be rather close minded.

As Bell Hooks describes, there is a difference between being anti-choice and anti-abortion. Anti-choice implies that a person is against the right for a woman to choose whether or not she wants to keep her baby. Anti-abortion implies that a person is against abortion. Personally, I agree with Bell Hooks and believe that a person who is anti-abortion but pro-choice is a feminist because although they are personally against abortion, they support a woman's right to choose what she wants to do with her body. I understand that abortion is only one of the many issues related to feminism, however I would have to agree with Hooks that a woman who does not support another woman's right to decide what happens to her body, is not a feminist.
